Accepting payments in Ghana: the five verified API options

Five verified payment APIs operate in Ghana today, covering mobile money, cards, bank transfers, and remittance. This guide covers what each one handles, how they differ, and how to choose based on your product.

8 verified providers covered. Select one to open its registry record.

Mobile money is the dominant payment rail in Ghana. MTN Mobile Money (MoMo), Vodafone Cash, and AirtelTigo Money collectively reach a large share of the adult population. Any payment API you choose needs to cover these networks. Cards matter for formal-sector and diaspora transactions; USSD matters where smartphone penetration is lower.

The Wycord registry has eight verified APIs for Ghana. Five handle payment collection and disbursement directly. Here is what each does, and when to use it.

The five verified payment APIs

Hubtel

Hubtel is the longest-standing Ghanaian fintech in the registry, founded in 2005 as SMSGH. Its REST API covers mobile money collection, card payments, bank transfers via the GhIPSS interbank network, USSD flows, SMS, and ID verification (Ghana Card, Voter ID) in a single platform.

The breadth is Hubtel's main argument: if you need payment collection, OTP delivery, USSD fallback, and KYC under one contract, Hubtel can handle all of it. Access requires an approval process; documentation is at developers.hubtel.com.

Theteller (PaySwitch)

Theteller covers card, mobile money, and bank-transfer payouts in one gateway. The mobile money coverage is notably broad: MTN MoMo, Vodafone Cash, AirtelTigo Money, Zeepay, and G-money are all explicitly listed. It ships Android and iOS SDKs, e-commerce plugins, and claims live integration in under an hour for developers already familiar with payment APIs. Three plan tiers exist (Direct, Classic, Premium), though pricing is not published publicly.

Access requires approval. Documentation is at theteller.net/documentation.

expressPay Ghana

expressPay is structured around four distinct APIs: Merchant (standard checkout), Merchant Direct (direct card processing), Tokenization (storing payment methods for repeat billing), and Invoice (generating and tracking invoices). The Tokenization API is the differentiator: if you're building a subscription product and need to charge a stored card or mobile money wallet on schedule, expressPay is one of the few Ghana options with a documented tokenization path.

An official PHP SDK is available on GitHub; the company claims four-language SDK coverage overall. Access requires approval.

Kowri Merchant / WebPOS API

Kowri, from SEVN Group and DreamOval, is built specifically for multi-wallet merchant checkout. A single API call can present MTN MoMo, Vodafone Cash, AirtelTigo Cash, and card as options, letting the customer choose at the point of sale. The API documentation is hosted on Postman.

The institutional licensing model makes Kowri better suited to established businesses than early-stage startups that need fast self-serve onboarding. It is the most POS-oriented option in the verified Ghana set.

Zeepay Developer API

Zeepay positions itself as Ghana's largest independent mobile-money fintech. Its REST API covers domestic mobile money transfers, bill payments, merchant collections, and cross-border remittance corridors. The remittance angle separates it from the others: if your product involves diaspora users sending money into Ghana, or Ghana-originating transfers to other African markets, Zeepay is the specialist in this verified set.

Access requires approval; documentation is at docs.myzeepay.com.

Three more verified APIs in the Ghana registry

The eight verified Ghana APIs cover more than payment collection.

Arkesel provides REST APIs for SMS, USSD, OTP, voice, WhatsApp Business, and email across Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, and South Africa. Pay-as-you-go pricing. Relevant for OTP delivery alongside any payment flow, or for USSD-based menus reaching feature-phone users. Docs: developers.arkesel.com. Verified: wycord.com/resource/arkesel

Ghana Card Identity Verification (NIA) is the statutory government biometric ID check, operated by the National Identification Authority under Act 707 (2006). Access is institutional and contract-gated, not self-serve. Required if your product must formally verify a user's identity against the national ID database. GRA Sentinel is the Ghana Revenue Authority's mandatory VAT e-invoicing (VSDC) specification. Any accounting or invoicing software serving VAT-registered businesses in Ghana must implement this. The public specification document is 50 pages; institutional access is required to go live. Verified: wycord.com/resource/gra-sentinel-api-e-vat-electronic-invoicing

A note on onboarding

None of the five payment APIs offer fully self-serve access. All require some form of approval or institutional agreement before you can process live transactions. Build in days to weeks for review depending on your business stage and use case. Start with sandbox documentation early so integration work does not block you while the approval is in progress.
