Building for Ghana: the stack beyond payments

Ghana has 18 verified resources in the Wycord registry: identity verification, Ghanaian language NLP, digital addressing, economic data, tax compliance, and agritech. This guide maps them by use case.

11 verified providers covered. Select one to open its registry record.

Developer conversations about Ghana often start and end with payment APIs. The Wycord registry tells a fuller story: 18 verified resources covering identity verification, Ghanaian language NLP, digital addressing, economic data, tax compliance, and agritech. Payments are one layer of the stack. This guide covers the rest.

For payment APIs specifically, wycord.com/best/apis-in-ghana lists the verified options with status and documentation links.

Identity verification

The National Identification Authority (NIA) provides API access to Ghana Card verification under an institutional, contract-gated model. There is no public self-serve endpoint. Organizations must sign a formal agreement with the NIA to query the biometric national ID database. The statutory basis is Act 707 (2006), which established the NIA. Access requirements and endpoint documentation are published at nia.gov.gh.

Hubtel, established in Ghana in 2005, offers ID verification alongside its mobile money, card payments, SMS, and USSD APIs under a single developer portal. If your product needs both identity checks and payment collections, evaluating Hubtel avoids the need for a separate NIA institutional contract in some cases.

Messaging and communications

Three verified providers cover SMS, USSD, voice, and OTP for Ghana:

  • Arkesel: REST APIs for SMS, USSD, voice, OTP, WhatsApp Business, and email. Pay-as-you-go pricing, code samples in 7+ languages, and coverage that extends to Nigeria, Tanzania, and South Africa. The practical default for products operating across West Africa.
  • MNotify (now operating as BMS): SMS, voice, USSD, and IVR APIs with API-key authentication, maintained for the Ghana market specifically. Documentation at readthedocs.mnotify.com.
  • Hubtel also provides SMS and USSD channels, useful if you want a single provider covering messaging, payments, and identity under one account.

Ghanaian language NLP

GhanaNLP is an open-source initiative that has produced the most complete set of Ghanaian language tools available to developers. Three verified resources cover different integration patterns:

  • GhanaNLP Khaya: Machine translation, text-to-speech, and automatic speech recognition across 10+ Ghanaian languages, including Twi, Ewe, Ga, Dagbani, and Frafra. Free tier available with API key signup. Python and JavaScript SDKs alongside the REST API. This is the production-ready default for apps that need to support Ghanaian local languages in translation, voice, or speech recognition.
  • GhanaNLP ABENA: A family of BERT, DistilBERT, and RoBERTa models fine-tuned for Twi/Akan, covering both Asante and Akuapem dialects. Free and open-source on GitHub. Use this when you need a task-specific model for classification, named entity recognition, or sentiment analysis that you want to fine-tune on your own Twi/Akan data.
  • GhanaNLP Kasa: The open-source toolkit from the same project, designed for local development and research workflows.

Digital addressing and geospatial data

Ghana Post operates a national digital addressing system that assigns structured GPS codes (for example, GA-554-3608) to locations that lack conventional street addresses. GhanaPostGPS MCP is a free, open-source MCP server that resolves these codes into coordinates, street names, districts, and regions, with batch processing and format validation included. Any product handling deliveries, field operations, or user location input in Ghana will encounter these codes. Source at github.com/kreativwiz1/GhanaPostGPS-MCP.

Two datasets complete the geospatial layer:

Economic and financial data

ghana-data-mcp is a free MCP server giving AI tools access to Ghana Stock Exchange share prices, Bank of Ghana treasury bill and forex rates, Ghana Statistical Service indicators, and IMF macroeconomic data. It is deployed as a remote Cloudflare Workers endpoint, so no infrastructure setup is required. Source at github.com/epigos/ghana-data-mcp.

Tax compliance for software vendors

The Ghana Revenue Authority's Sentinel API is a mandatory requirement for accounting and invoicing software operating in Ghana's VAT-registered market. It governs the VSDC e-invoicing system. GRA publishes a 50-page technical specification at gra.gov.gh/online-tools/gra-sentinal-api/ and provides a UAT certification pathway for vendors. There is no fee for accessing the specification. Any software product that processes VAT invoices in Ghana needs this integration to achieve compliance.

Agritech

Darli AI from Farmerline is a multimodal advisory agent accessible via WhatsApp, voice, and web in 27 languages, including 20 African languages. It supports crop disease diagnosis from photos, treatment guidance for cassava, cocoa, maize, coffee, and rice, and delivers weather and market information. Free for farmers to use directly. Named a TIME Best Invention of 2024. Built in Ghana, deployed across approximately 60 countries with over 1 million users. The developer API is available through farmerline.co.
