Building for Kenya: the stack beyond payments and KYC
The Wycord registry lists 13 APIs for Kenya alongside MCP servers, tools, and datasets covering insurance, tax compliance, interbank transfers, agriculture, and civic data. This guide maps them by use case.
kenya
The Wycord registry lists 13 APIs for Kenya, 12 of which show live status as of this writing. Two guides already cover the most-searched layers: payment APIs (M-Pesa Daraja, Jenga, Africa's Talking, MCP servers) and KYC and identity verification. This guide covers everything else: insurance, tax compliance, interbank banking, and the MCP servers and datasets that matter for AI applications built in a Kenyan context.
Insurance APIs
Two insurance APIs are in the Kenya registry.
Turaco is a microinsurance REST API covering the full policy lifecycle: products, customers, policies, claims, and payments. Wycord's verification process confirms it live. Turaco's model is embedded and group insurance, so it fits lenders, savings platforms, and employers that want to add coverage to an existing financial product. Access requires an approval process through turaco.insure.
Lami is a Kenya-based insurtech API for embedding and distributing digital insurance products. The registry lists it as live but not yet through Wycord's full verification process. Access requires approval through lami.world.
For products embedding insurance: Turaco's verified status makes it the lower-risk starting point. Both require onboarding conversations, so contact early.
Tax compliance: KRA eTIMS
KRA eTIMS is Kenya Revenue Authority's Electronic Tax Invoice Management System. The System-to-System (S2S) API lets software submit tax invoices directly to the KRA without hardware. Integration is free. KRA publishes documentation at kra.go.ke.
This is a compliance requirement, not an optional feature. Any ERP, accounting platform, or billing product used by VAT-registered Kenyan businesses needs this integration. The Wycord registry shows it verified live.
The KRA MCP Server (/resource/kra-mcp-server) exposes KRA tax and PAYE data as MCP tools, useful for compliance agents and financial planning workflows built on LLMs. It appears in the registry but has not yet passed Wycord's verification process.
Interbank transfers and direct banking APIs
Pesalink is the interbank real-time payment network operated by the Kenya Bankers Association. The developer API covers real-time bank-to-bank transfers and bulk payments across Kenya's commercial banking network. It is the infrastructure layer for any product that needs to move money between bank accounts outside of M-Pesa rails. Access requires institutional approval and a formal agreement with Pesalink. Details at pesalink.co.ke.
KCB BUNI is KCB Group's developer portal covering Send Money, Receive Payments, and Account Services APIs, connecting directly into one of Kenya's largest commercial banks. The registry lists it live but not yet verified. Access through buni.kcbgroup.com.
Jenga API by Finserve Africa, which covers cross-border transfers across seven East African markets, is part of the payments layer: see wycord.com/best/apis-in-kenya.
Additional payment APIs in the registry
Beyond M-Pesa Daraja and Jenga, the Kenya API registry includes four more verified payment options:
- IntaSend: multi-rail collection covering M-Pesa, cards, and bank payouts. Public pricing: M-Pesa 3%, cards 3.5%. The only Kenya API in the registry with publicly listed rates.
- Kopo Kopo: Buy Goods till aggregation and disbursement for Kenyan SMEs. Now part of Moniepoint. Requires approval.
- SasaPay: digital-wallet and WAAS API supporting C2B, B2C, B2B, and remittance for agency banking. Requires approval.
- iPay Africa: payment gateway covering C2B, B2B, B2C, and STK Push across East Africa. Requires approval.
MCP servers for non-payment use cases
Kenya has more registered MCP servers than any other country in the Wycord registry. Most cover M-Pesa (detailed in the payments guide). The non-payment MCPs verified live are:
- kilimo-mcp: agriculture data MCP server. For AI agents that need crop, farming, or agritech context in a Kenyan setting.
- WapiMaji MCP: water and drought data MCP server. Provides weather and drought indicators relevant to agricultural planning, infrastructure, and climate-sensitive products.
The registry also lists unverified MCP entries for civic information, parliamentary Hansard, land administration, environment, schools, and capital markets. These are present but have not passed Wycord's link verification yet. Browse the full list at wycord.com/mcp.
Datasets
Three freely accessible Kenya datasets are verified in the registry:
- Kenya Subnational Administrative Boundaries: GIS-ready county, subcounty, and ward boundary data from OCHA's Common Operational Dataset programme. Open license. For maps, geographic filtering, and regional analytics.
- Kenya Subnational Population Statistics: Demographic breakdowns by county and subcounty from HDX/UNFPA. CC BY-IGO. For market sizing, coverage planning, and demand forecasting.
- Kencorpus: A Kenyan language corpus covering Swahili, Gikuyu, and Dholuo, hosted on Harvard Dataverse. Open access. For NLP model training and language research focused on Kenyan languages.
