Building for Nigeria: the stack beyond payments
Nigeria has 210 verified developer resources in the Wycord registry. This guide maps the layers beyond payments and KYC: 17 AI and speech tools, 29 MCP servers including data analytics and government infrastructure, 33 datasets with deep geospatial coverage, and specialized APIs for agriculture, healthcare, and weather.
nigeria
Nigeria has 210 verified resources in the Wycord registry, more than any other African country. Dedicated guides already cover the most-searched layers: payment APIs (Paystack, Flutterwave, Monnify, Squad, and others), KYC and identity, logistics, open banking, card issuing, NGN exchange rates, and SMS. This guide maps what those guides don't go deep on: 17 AI and speech tools, a cluster of data-focused MCP servers, 33 datasets with strong geospatial coverage, and specialized APIs for agriculture, healthcare, and weather.
AI and speech infrastructure
The registry lists 17 live AI resources tagged to Nigeria. Five are directly relevant to production app development.
YarnGPT2b delivers Nigerian-accented English text-to-speech and automatic speech recognition with 11 distinct voices. Training data came from Nollywood film audio and podcast content. Open-source under Apache 2.0, released January 2025. Use it for IVR systems, voice interfaces, or transcription tools targeting Nigerian-accented English.
NaijaML is a production NLP library (v0.2.1, March 2026) covering all four major Nigerian languages. It runs on 4GB RAM with no GPU and includes PII masking for NIN numbers and phone numbers. Apache 2.0 and free. The default starting point for any NLP task in Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, or Nigerian English on commodity hardware.
N-ATLaS, built by Awarri in partnership with NCAIR and the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, is Nigeria's first government-backed open-source multilingual LLM. It is a Llama-3 8B model fine-tuned on approximately 392 million tokens of English, Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba. The research license is free for fewer than 1,000 active end-users; a commercial license applies above that threshold.
Intron Health provides clinical speech recognition (STT) and text-to-speech APIs trained on a database covering 200+ African accents. Targets healthcare documentation, call centres, legal transcription, and biometrics. Developer account required; pricing is on request at docs.voice.intron.io.
Spitch is a Lagos-based voice AI API (founded October 2024) covering ASR, TTS, and translation for Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Nigerian-accented English, and Amharic. Usage-based pricing with $1 free credit for new developers. Documentation at docs.spitch.app.
Data MCP servers: economics, geography, and compliance
Nigeria has 29 verified MCP servers, 28 live. Payment MCP servers are covered in the Wycord MCP guide. Less visible is a cluster of data and analytics servers that give AI agents access to Nigerian government and statistical data directly:
- CBN MCP: regulatory circulars, official NGN exchange rates, and monetary policy metrics from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Open-source, free, built by Zfinix.
- Nigeria Admin Boundaries MCP and Nigeria Admin Divisions MCP: GRID3-sourced state, LGA, and ward boundaries as queryable MCP tools. Useful for any agent that needs geographic context at the sub-state level.
- Nigeria Health Facilities MCP: health facility locations for healthcare, insurance, or field deployment agents.
- Nigeria Macro Indicators MCP and Nigeria IMF WEO MCP: World Bank macroeconomic data and IMF World Economic Outlook data for Nigeria as MCP tools.
- Nigeria Sanctions Screening MCP: NIGSAC sanctions list lookup for AML and compliance workflows.
- Nigeria Bank Resolve MCP: bank name resolution from account number, useful in payment confirmation and user-facing bank display flows.
- Nigeria Trade Intel MCP, Nigeria UN SDG MCP, and Nigeria Electricity Meter MCP: trade data, SDG indicators, and electricity meter integration respectively.
All are open-source and free to run.
Geospatial and administrative datasets
The registry holds 33 verified Nigerian datasets. The geospatial layer covers national administrative boundaries, population grids, settlement extents, health facilities, and cell tower locations, all without commercial licensing:
- LGA Boundaries (GRID3) and Ward Boundaries (GRID3): GIS-ready boundaries for Nigeria's 774 local government areas and their wards.
- GRID3 Nigeria Settlement Extents v4.0: machine-delineated boundaries for all Nigerian settlements down to hamlet scale. Useful for coverage gap analysis and last-mile planning.
- GRID3 Health Facilities v2.0 and Health Facility Registry (HUMDATA): two independently verified sources for health facility locations. Cross-referencing them improves data confidence for health proximity or insurance coverage calculations.
- Population estimates (GRID3 v3.0) and WorldPop Nigeria Population Counts 2020: gridded population counts for market sizing, coverage planning, and demographic analysis.
- States/LGAs JSON: a lightweight structured reference for all states and LGAs. Use for form dropdowns, data validation, and non-GIS lookups.
- OpenCelliD Nigeria: cell tower locations for coverage mapping and signal-strength analysis.
The economic datasets in the same index include the CBN Statistics Database, NBS Consumer Price Index and inflation data, FEWS NET staple food prices, NCC telecom statistics, and NERC electricity sector quarterly reports.
Specialized APIs
Three APIs cover sectors with no existing dedicated guide:
Hello Tractor is an agritech tractor-sharing platform with a developer API spanning financial services, telemetry ingestion, and marketplace domains. It targets banks, OEMs, dealers, and integrators. Access requires approval; documentation is at developers.hellotractor.com.
NiMet Weather is the Nigerian Meteorological Agency's official weather API, free and unrestricted. Documentation is limited and the API is rarely listed in developer directories, but it is the only official Nigeria-specific weather source in the registry. Practical for agricultural, logistics, and construction applications.
EMDEX Drug API provides a database of 15,000+ NAFDAC-registered drugs. It targets pharmacy applications, drug interaction tools, supply chain systems, and health insurance platforms. Commercial pricing; the underlying data derives from NAFDAC.
