Building for South Africa: the complete verified stack

The Wycord registry lists 25 resources for South Africa across payments, identity, AI models, language tools, and MCP servers. This guide organises them by use case and covers what makes the South African developer stack different.

19 verified providers covered. Select one to open its registry record.

The Wycord registry lists 25 resources for South Africa. Two existing guides cover the most-searched layers: accepting payments in South Africa and KYC and identity APIs in South Africa. This guide covers the complete stack: the full breadth of the payment layer, three open-source ID validation libraries, a language AI ecosystem that is among the deepest on the continent, and five MCP servers for developers building agent applications.

What makes South Africa different

Three things distinguish the South African stack from other major African markets.

The payment rails are diverse and competing. M-Pesa dominates East Africa with one clear rail; South Africa has open banking, EFT, card, QR, and crypto all operating in parallel, with working developer portals across all of them. Nine payment APIs are in the registry and the right choice depends on your use case.

Local AI and language technology is unusually rich. University of Pretoria's DSFSI group and Cape Town's Lelapa AI have produced open-weight language models for Zulu, Xhosa, Sesotho, Setswana, and other South African languages. South Africa's 11 official languages create real commercial demand for multilingual AI, which is why the research output here is substantive rather than academic.

The MCP server ecosystem is growing. Five South Africa MCP servers are in the registry, covering crypto market data, central bank monetary data, and government procurement. This makes South Africa one of the better-served markets for developers building LLM agents that need local structured data.

Payment APIs: nine options across four categories

Bank-to-bank and open banking

Stitch is the most complete open-banking option currently in the registry. Its GraphQL-first API covers 20+ payment methods: DebiCheck, manual EFT, Capitec Pay, card, Apple Pay, and others. ISO 27001 and PCI DSS Level 1 certified. Stitch Express gets you live in one day; an enterprise tier handles custom flows. Approval required.

Ozow handles instant EFT and PayShap across 47 million South African bank account holders. It also supports QR codes, One-Blink biometric payments, WhatsApp payments, and Capitec Pay. Note: the Wycord registry marks Ozow's documentation URL as broken at time of writing. Check ozow.com directly for the current developer portal.

Cards and QR

Yoco provides card payment APIs and SDKs alongside its SMB card machine hardware. ecommerce plugins for WooCommerce, Wix, and Shopify are available. Yoco also has an official MCP server for agent integrations. Approval required.

Peach Payments operates across 15+ African markets. Integration options include Embedded Checkout, Hosted Checkout, Server-to-Server API, and mobile SDKs for iOS, Android, Flutter, and React Native. A Postman workspace and sandbox environment are available.

SnapScan is the South African QR payment standard, present at most physical retail locations. Any product that needs to accept QR payments at the point of sale will need SnapScan's merchant API.

Orchestration

Revio sits above individual payment providers and routes across 70+ payment methods including DebiCheck. Use it when you need a single PCI-compliant API that normalises across Stitch, Ozow, and cards without building your own routing logic.

Crypto

Luno, Cape Town-founded and acquired by Digital Currency Group, provides a REST and WebSocket API for crypto exchange functionality. VALR is licensed by the FSCA (FSP 53308) and covers 60+ cryptocurrencies with its own REST and streaming WebSocket API. Both are in the registry; Luno also has an official MCP server (see below).

ID validation: three open-source libraries

If you only need to validate a South African ID number client-side or server-side without an API call, three libraries are in the registry:

For full KYC checks against the Department of Home Affairs, bank account verification, AML/PEP screening, and CIPC company lookups, see Datanamix in the KYC guide.

AI and language technology

Four AI resources cover South Africa in the registry.

Speech and translation

Vulavula by Lelapa AI provides speech-to-text and machine translation across isiZulu, Sesotho, Sepedi, Setswana, isiXhosa, Afrikaans, English, Swahili, Hausa, Yoruba, and French. Real-time and batch transcription are both available. Freemium pricing with on-premises deployment for telco and financial services deployments. Wycord-verified.

Open language models

InkubaLM is a 400M-parameter LLM trained by Lelapa AI on 2.4 billion tokens covering isiZulu, Yoruba, Swahili, isiXhosa, Hausa, English, and French. CC BY-NC 4.0 license; weights available on HuggingFace. Use it for fine-tuning or inference where a model grounded in African language data matters.

Zabantu-XLM-Roberta is an XLM-RoBERTa-family model trained on eight South African Bantu languages: Zulu, Xhosa, Tshivenda, Swati, Northern Sotho, Southern Sotho, Setswana, and Xitsonga. Built by DSFSI at the University of Pretoria. Free open weights at dsfsi/zabantu-xlm-roberta on HuggingFace.

GPU compute

Cassava Technologies AI Factory is an NVIDIA Cloud Partner with 12,000 GPUs across data centers in Cape Town, Lagos, Nairobi, Cairo, and Casablanca. Partners include AWS, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Google. Enterprise pricing only, no public self-serve tier. The right option when you need GPU compute with African data residency requirements.

MCP servers for AI agents

Five South Africa MCP servers are in the registry. Three have working documentation:

  • Luno MCP Server: Official Go-based MCP server from Luno, one of the few official (non-community) MCP implementations covering African infrastructure. For agents that need live crypto market data.
  • mcp-sarb-za: Keyless MCP for South African Reserve Bank monetary policy and financial data via Pipeworx. MIT licensed.
  • mcp-south-africa-tenders: Keyless MCP for National Treasury eTenders and OCPO procurement data. MIT licensed.

PayFast MCP and Yoco MCP are registered but their documentation links are broken at time of writing.
