Credit scoring and bureau APIs in Africa, by country
Building a lender, BNPL product, or credit risk tool in Africa means navigating different data sources by country. This guide covers the verified APIs for transaction-based scoring, bureau lookups, and affordability assessments, with a decision guide by market.
Credit infrastructure in Africa is not uniform. South Africa has three operating credit bureaus with developer-accessible APIs. Kenya has Credit Reference Bureaus, but many borrowers have thin or missing bureau files. Nigeria's formal bureau coverage is still patchy, so most digital lenders rely on transaction patterns and mobile money data instead of bureau scores.
This matters for builders. A stack that works perfectly in South Africa will not translate directly to Kenya or Nigeria. The Wycord registry currently verifies three APIs that directly address credit scoring and lending decisions across these markets.
Pngme: transaction data across five African markets
Pngme is a financial data infrastructure platform that aggregates bank, loan, and airtime transaction data from financial institutions across Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, and Zambia. It does not connect to credit bureaus. Its value is alternative credit data: building a financial picture from transaction history where bureau files are thin or do not exist.
What the platform delivers:
- Machine-learning-ready financial features derived from raw transaction data
- Alert labels for risk signals, such as irregular income patterns or overdraft behaviour
- A synthetic data store for model training and testing, covering consumer and MSME financial patterns from Kenya, Nigeria, and Uganda
- Compliance with GDPR, and the data protection regulations of Kenya (KDPA), Nigeria (NDPA), and Ghana (GDPA)
Named customers include Kuda, RenMoney, ABSA, DTB, and Umba. The platform holds SOC 2 Type 1 certification.
Developer docs are live at developers.api.pngme.com. Access is approval-gated.
Pngme is the clearest choice for any lending product targeting Nigeria or the other four markets. It is also the only tool in the registry covering all five markets under a consistent API contract.
Datanamix: registered credit bureau API for South Africa
Datanamix is a registered credit bureau in South Africa, holding registration NCRCB68-2026-2027 under the National Credit Act 34 of 2005. It is a member of the Credit Bureau Association and holds ISO 27001-2022 certification.
Through one REST API integration, it exposes consumer and commercial data from TransUnion, Experian, and XDS, plus records from the Department of Home Affairs, CIPC, and SARS. For a builder in South Africa, this is the most comprehensive credit data source in the registry.
Key products for credit decisions:
- Affordability Assessment: models income, expenses, obligations, and net disposable income
- Express Consumer Score: numeric risk score with immediate response
- Commercial Express Score: for business and SME lending
- Bank Account Verification: confirms ownership and account status before disbursement
- AML and PEP Sanctions Screening: standard and premium tiers, for both consumer and commercial records
- Consumer and Commercial Credit Reports: full bureau reports from TransUnion, Experian, and XDS
Named clients include Standard Bank, NedBank, Capitec, Hollard, Luno, and Bidvest Bank.
Sandbox access is free. Production requires a direct commercial agreement with Datanamix. Developer docs and a Swagger tool are at datanamix.com/developer-hub.
Note: the Wycord registry entry for Datanamix was sourced from a community submission and is pending the standard verification sweep. The facts above are confirmed directly from their developer hub and about page.
Peleza: CRB checks plus KYC in one API, Kenya
Peleza is a Nairobi-based platform covering KYC, KYB, and AML alongside Credit Reference Bureau checks, all from one REST API. The Wycord-verified registry entry confirms CRB access under their Anti-Fraud Hub product.
For a lender or BNPL operator in Kenya, this matters: you can complete identity verification, address confirmation, and a credit history check in a single integration rather than connecting to separate KYC and CRB providers.
The platform covers:
- Government ID and document verification
- Facial biometric and liveness detection
- Address verification, both digital and via field agents
- AML and PEP screening
- Credit risk profiling via CRB checks
- Business verification (KYB)
SDKs are available for JavaScript, iOS, Android, and Flutter. A sandbox environment is available at sandbox.peleza.com. Access is approval-gated.
Developer docs: docs.peleza.com.
For Kenya specifically, Peleza and Pngme are complementary rather than competing. Peleza gives you the CRB-linked credit history and identity checks. Pngme gives you the transaction-level financial behaviour. A lender building a full underwriting model in Kenya might use both.
