Embedded insurance APIs in Africa: six verified options
If your app touches mobility, logistics, lending, or health in Africa, you can now embed insurance without holding a license. These are the six verified options in the Wycord registry.
Your ride-hail platform needs motor insurance for drivers. Your buy-now-pay-later product needs credit life. Your health app needs to process medical claims. You do not need to become an insurer to offer any of these: you need an API.
Africa now has a small but verified layer of embedded insurance infrastructure. The Wycord registry lists six resources that let builders distribute or automate insurance programmatically. Here is what each one does and when to use it.
Nigerian providers
Four of the six verified resources are Nigeria-based, reflecting the depth of insurtech activity there.
Curacel
Curacel builds AI-powered tools for insurers and platforms that want to automate claims and distribution. Its suite covers health claims processing with fraud detection, motor underwriting and claims automation, travel insurance distribution, and a multi-channel distribution layer called Grow. Clients include AXA, Allianz, and Old Mutual.
Curacel is best suited to platforms already partnered with an insurer that need to offload claims processing or fraud detection rather than build their own pipeline.

MyCover.ai
MyCover.ai is an open insurance distribution platform offering 32+ product types: auto, health, travel, gadget, credit life, personal accident, goods in transit, and home. It is not an insurer. It connects your product to licensed carriers and handles distribution through your interface.
The developer tooling is broad: SDKs for JavaScript, ReactJS, VueJS, Android, and iOS, plus a low-code embed option and white-label capability. If you want to offer a wide product menu without building underwriting logic, this is the most product-complete Nigerian option.

Octamile
Octamile provides insurance management infrastructure with a specific emphasis on motor insurance in Nigeria. Its JSON API covers premium calculation, policy purchase, certificate generation, claims management with fraud detection, vehicle history checks, and vehicle valuation.
Partners include AXA Mansard, First Bank Nigeria, and Leadway Insurance. For builders working in logistics, fleet management, or mobility in Nigeria, the vehicle valuation and motor certificate generation endpoints make Octamile a practical first call.

EMDEX Drug API
EMDEX is not an insurance platform, but it belongs in this category for anyone building a health insurance product. It provides a database of 15,000+ NAFDAC-registered drugs via a commercial REST API, built for pharmacy and healthcare applications. Health insurance platforms in Nigeria can use it to validate drug claims, check dosages, and flag dispensing anomalies.

East African providers
Turaco
Turaco is a microinsurance company with a public REST API and OpenAPI documentation. It operates across six markets: Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Zambia, and Pakistan. Coverage starts at $2 per policy. The company reports 7 million lives covered and a median claims turnaround of 4 hours.
Partners include M-KOPA, Airtel Money, and BRAC, and Turaco has delivered embedded insurance through device financing and mobile money. If you are building a fintech, mobile lending, or device financing product for mass-market users across East or West Africa, Turaco is the most operationally tested microinsurance option in the registry.

Access and onboarding
Every insurance platform in this list requires approval before you can access production credentials. None has instant self-serve signup. Budget one to four weeks for onboarding, and start in the sandbox each provider makes available while approval is pending.
MyCover.ai and Octamile both maintain public developer docs with product schemas and pricing structures you can review before making contact. Turaco's OpenAPI spec is publicly accessible at their docs URL above and gives a clear picture of the data model before you commit.
Scope and limits
These six resources cover distribution and claims APIs. None of them are underwriters. Every embedded policy sold through these platforms is backed by a licensed insurer in the relevant market. Your compliance obligation is to ensure that the carrier your API partner uses is locally licensed, which each of these providers handles on your behalf.
The Nigeria-to-Kenya concentration in this registry is real. If you are building in Francophone West Africa, Southern Africa outside South Africa, or North Africa, embedded insurance API coverage is thinner. Check the full registry for updates as the category grows.
