NGN exchange rate APIs compared for Nigerian builders
Nigerian apps cannot rely on a single official rate. This guide maps the verified exchange rate APIs and MCP servers in the Wycord registry, explains the difference between CBN, parallel, and aggregated rates, and shows which to use for your use case.
nigeria
If you build a Nigerian fintech app, an e-commerce checkout, or a wallet product, you need exchange rates. The problem is that "the NGN rate" does not exist as a single number. There are at least four distinct rates in circulation at any given time, and showing the wrong one can mislead your users or break your pricing logic.
This guide maps the verified rate APIs and MCP servers in the Wycord registry, explains what each rate type means, and gives you a clear decision framework.
The four NGN rate types
Before choosing an API, understand what you are actually querying:
- CBN official rate: The rate published by the Central Bank of Nigeria on business days. Since the 2023 FX reform, the CBN rate is set through the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) and is the only legally mandated rate for regulated transactions.
- Parallel market rate: The rate transacted outside official banking channels, often significantly higher or lower than the CBN rate depending on liquidity. Also called the street or black-market rate. Widely tracked by businesses and consumers.
- BDC rate: The rate offered by licensed Bureau de Change operators. Falls between the CBN rate and the parallel market, though the gap narrows during periods of CBN enforcement.
- ATM/bank rate: The rate banks apply to naira withdrawals from foreign cards or USD debit card purchases. Often closer to CBN but with bank-specific spreads.
Most fintech apps need at least two of these: the CBN rate for regulatory compliance, and either the parallel or BDC rate for product reality.
The verified rate APIs
| Resource | Rate types | Cost | Update cadence | Auth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AbokiFX | CBN, parallel, BDC, ATM | £100/yr | Multiple times daily | API key |
| BankFxApi | CBN only | Free (no card) | Daily (business days) | API key |
| Monierate | Mid-market, parallel, official (40+ providers) | Tiered (signup) | Real-time / near-real-time | API key |
| Quidax | USDT/NGN crypto ticker (parallel proxy) | Free | Real-time | None |
AbokiFX
AbokiFX is the longest-running dedicated NGN rate data service and the only API in the Wycord registry that explicitly covers all four rate types: CBN, parallel, BDC, and ATM. Endpoints cover current, historical, and movement data, so you can show rate trends as well as spot rates.
The API subscription costs £100 per year. Note from the Wycord registry: the CBN investigated AbokiFX for influencing the parallel market in 2021 and issued a sanction order, which was lifted in July 2023. Some regulatory risk persists. For products that depend on long-term parallel rate data, plan for disruption scenarios.
BankFxApi
BankFxApi provides daily CBN-sourced NGN exchange rates against 14 currencies via a free JSON API with no billing required. Coverage is CBN-official only: no parallel or BDC data. Documentation is live and the service requires an API key to call.
This is the right choice when you need the legally correct rate for receipts, invoicing, or regulated reporting, and when cost is a constraint. It will not reflect what consumers see at a bureau de change or on the street.
Monierate
Monierate aggregates rates from 40+ exchanges and providers, covering mid-market, official, and parallel-market sources in one API. Core endpoints include /rates/latest, /rates/convert, /rates/pair-quote, /rates/historical, and a /providers/list endpoint so you can see which sources contributed to a given rate.
Pricing is tiered and requires signup to view. If you need a single API that covers multiple rate types without managing separate integrations, Monierate is the most complete option in the verified registry.
Quidax (free parallel-market proxy)
Quidax is a Nigerian crypto exchange, not an FX data service, but its public USDT/NGN ticker is accessible without an API key or account and tracks the parallel market rate within approximately 5 to 8 NGN. If you need a live, free, no-signup proxy for the parallel rate, this is the lightest integration possible.
The tradeoff: it is a crypto exchange price, not an actual BDC or street rate. Spreads widen during volatile market periods. Do not use it for regulated reporting or for any product where users are transacting at the displayed rate.
What to use when
- Regulated fintech (CBN-licensed product, receipts, auditable records): BankFxApi for cost efficiency, or Monierate's official rate endpoint.
- Consumer app showing "current" NGN rate to users: Monierate covers the most ground. Quidax as a free fallback for parallel-rate display only.
- Product that needs all four rate types (parallel + BDC + ATM + CBN): AbokiFX is the only single-source option. Account for the annual cost and regulatory history.
- Rate trend charts or historical analysis: AbokiFX (historical endpoints) or Monierate (historical endpoint). BankFxApi is CBN-only with daily cadence.
- Quick prototype or internal tool: Quidax (zero friction) or BankFxApi (free, accurate CBN rate).
For AI agents: MCP servers
If you are building AI agents or using Claude Desktop, three MCP servers in the Wycord registry expose NGN rate data directly to your agent:
- CBN MCP (slug:
cbn-mcp): wraps the CBN public API for official exchange rates and regulatory circulars. Free and open-source. Wycord page - Nigeria FX Rates MCP (slug:
nigeria-fx-rates-mcp): provides live NGN rates against USD, EUR, and GBP via aget_fx_ratestool. Free, MIT license, installable vianpx -y @braynexservices/nigeria-mcp-fx-rates. No API key required. Wycord page - Nigeria Quidax Crypto MCP (slug:
nigeria-quidax-crypto-mcp): delivers live BTC/NGN, ETH/NGN, USDT/NGN and other crypto tickers for agents. Free, MIT license. Wycord page
One thing to get right
Whichever API you choose, be explicit in your UI and documentation about which rate type you are displaying. Showing a CBN rate while users expect the parallel rate, or vice versa, creates trust problems fast. Label it: "CBN official rate" or "parallel market rate (Monierate)" so users know what they are looking at.
